Japan Lifts Arms Export Ban in Major Policy Shift Amid Rising Regional Security Tensions
Japan has made changes in its pacifism stance and presented new guidelines. According to the new guidelines presented by the Japanese prime minister, Sanae Takaichi, the country is now allowed to export weapons that can cause death and injury to other nations rather than sticking to non-lethal devices. The country can now export arms to 17 countries where there are defense agreements between them, such as the United States and the United Kingdom. While the prime minister claims that Japan is a "peace-loving country," she emphasizes that the "harsh security environment" created by its neighboring countries like China, Russia, and North Korea requires Japan to have a strong military position.
